Well, hell. Everyone else is talking about it. Why shouldn't we?

Take it away, palace press release:

"The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince William to Miss Catherine Middleton.

The wedding will take place in the Spring or Summer of 2011, in London. Further details about the wedding day will be announced in due course."

We understand she's already dropped the "Kate" for Catherine. We guess "Queen Kate" didn't sound like a good idea.

The dress is from the Issa London collection, founded by Brazilian designer Daniella Issa Helayel. Apparently one of her favorite designers.

It's a beautiful dress. Great color for her, fits her like a glove, and perfect for the occasion.

And he gave her his mother's engagement ring. You make the call: weird (given how his parents' marriage turned out) or touching? It's a gorgeous ring.

We're neither Anglophiles nor Royal Watchers so we're appealing to our minions who are. Is this a good match? We have no real opinion. They make a nice looking couple and it speaks well that they've been dating for so long, right? To the Brits in the readership: is she liked? Is the poor girl expected to take on the mantle of her departed mother-in-law? Is Charles ever going to be king or will they just hand it to William? Educate us.

Isn't it weird to think of Diana as someone's mother-in-law? In five years we'll be talking about her as a grandmother. Time really does march on, doesn't it? Except for the Queen herself, who apparently plans to live and rule forever. Eventually, she'll just turn to marble and they'll put her on a parapet somewhere.
