We think you're in for a treat because the more we look at this editorial, the more we love it. Give us another ten minutes and we'll call if one of our favorite editorials in a long, long time. There's always a tendency to go retro with fashion editorials because we live in a post-modern world where references reign supreme and the person who gets the reference is allowed to feel superior over the person who doesn't. Plus, well-done retro instantly evokes feelings and opinions in the viewer. As you might know, we've been decrying the overuse of mid-century scenarios in fashion editorials, spurred on by the success of Mad Men. Like all trendy things, it was fun for a half hour and then it got old quickly.
We love this editorial because it's extremely retro and because it's NOT Camelot-era pencil skirts and pillbox hats. No, kittens. They went full-on JC Penney's catalogue 1974. Some of these images are shockingly faithful to their sources. And the beauty of it is, she's wearing some of the most gorgeous and stylish looks of 2010/11. THIS is what a really talented stylist can do with clothes. They can make you look at them in a whole new way. By adding leggings or era-appropriate platform shoes or tight, long-sleeved tees to stuff that JUST walked the runway, it's transformed into something that could quite easily work as costuming for a period movie. Plus, Suvi's working the SHIT out of everything. J'ADORE the whole damn thing. And the hair and makeup are freaking fabulous. Brava to all involved, because this is a real treat for the eyes and something of a love letter to fashion.
